A buying guide for the wakeboards we have for sale

Buywake wants to make sure you make the right pick when you choose and buy a wakeboard out of the wakeboards we have for sale in our online shop. There is a lot of information out there, which makes it hard to choose the right wakeboard for you. We offer a buying guide to learn about wakeboard types, models and features and how they support your riding style and ability. We have wakeboards for sale that you can buy in our online wakeboard shop, from well-known brands, such as Connelly, Hyperlite, Liquid Force, Slingshot and Ronix. There is a wakeboard for everyone and we hope this guide helps you to find the right one.

What is wakeboarding and what wakeboards do we have for sale?

Wakeboarding evolved out of waterskiing, you ride a board across the water instead of two skis, while you are towed by a boat or a cable. You can wakeboard on any stretch of water as long as it is suitable for a boat or cable. You can buy a wakeboard for both boat and cable wakeboarding, we have different varieties of wakeboards for sale in our online shop. Wakeboarding grew in popularity because it is fun, sociable and a relatively easy to learn. There are two types of wakeboarding:

  • Boat wakeboarding

You are towed behind a boat with a wake, at around 22 mph. You use the boat’s wake for tricks and if you fall, the boat will loop around and pick you up. Wakeboard schools are usually based on a lake with a wakeboard boat. Sets usually last 30 minutes and cost around $30.

  • Cable wakeboarding

This style of wakeboarding is similar to boat wakeboarding, but you are pulled by an overhead cable that goes around the lake. There are a few riders on the cable at once, with space between each person. Cable parks often have obstacles, such as kickers and sliders, as an alternative to a wake, so you are still able to perform tricks.

The different types of wakeboards we have for sale

The different styles of wakeboarding require a different type of wakeboard. You can buy both types of wakeboards in our online wakeboard shop. Cable boards are generally more flexible and have mellow rails, to ensure that they do not catch as easily on features at the cable park. Boat boards are usually stiffer and they have sharper rails, to be able to edge into the wake faster. There are three types of wakeboards, including a hybrid variety:

  • Boat wakeboards

You want a wakeboard that gives you sufficient pop (height) off the wake when you only wakeboard behind a boat. Boat wakeboards have sharper edges, that allow them to approach the wake with more momentum and speed. We have various wakeboards specifically for women or kids for sale that you can buy in our online wakeboard shop. Boat wakeboards are:

  • Available for riders of various levels of experience;
  • Available in all price ranges;
  • Specifically designed for boats;
  • Build with a foam core;
  • Often offered in interesting package deals.

  • Cable wakeboards

The popularity of cable riding is growing, if you only ride at a cable park you need a wakeboard with a softer flex, forgiving rails and a durable base and core. We recommend sizing up if you only ride cable, because the pull is slower than when you ride behind a boat. Most of the cable boards offer a natural flex because of the wooden core. Wood also makes the boards strong and durable. Cable wakeboards are:

  • Available for beginner and experienced riders;
  • Available in various prices;
  • Specifically designed for use in a cable park;
  • Build with a wooden core;
  • Offered in package deals that offer bang for your buck.

  • Boat-cable/hybrid/crossover wakeboards

You could also share your time between hanging behind a cable or a boat. Brands created boards that thrive in both settings. There is no need to purchase a cable board and a boat board. Hybrid boards are:

  • Available for all types of riders;
  • Available in various price ranges;
  • Designed to be used behind a cable and a boat;
  • Mostly build with a wooden core;
  • Often offered in package deals.

The different types of wakeboard rockers

Selecting a rocker is challenging if you have no experience, so we will try to simplify the choices. The rocker is the curve between the tip and the tail of the board. A three-stage rocker is curved in three sections with a flat spot at the bottom and a continuous rocker has a smoother, continuous curve. We have various wakeboards with different rocker for sale, that you can buy in our online wakeboard shop:

  • Continuous rocker wakeboards

A continuous rocker has a fluid, curved shape. Wakeboards with continuous rocker provide fast, smooth rides and allow you to link together turns more easily. You generate a lot of speed on a continuous rocker wakeboard. Speed and a very predictable pop will shoot you farther into the flats.

  • Three-stage rocker wakeboard

A wakeboard with a three-stage rocker features three distinct planes on the bottom of the board. A three-stage rocker causes your wakeboard to respond with more pop when you hit the wake. However, more rocker is not necessarily better. A wakeboard with a more dramatic rocker has a looser feel on the surface. Additionally, the shape causes the board to plow rather than cut through the water, making it slower. Your fins become less effective, so you rely more on edging. Boards with three-stage rocker have a flatter center spot, which makes the impact of landings more intense and gives a slight sluggish feel.

  • Hybrid rocker wakeboards

Hybrid three-Stage, abrupt continuous, blended three-Stage and hybrid rocker are all names given to rocker profiles somewhere between a continuous and three-stage rocker. Each brand and board offers a different combination.

The different types of wakeboard levels

We have wakeboards for sale for beginners, but experienced riders can also buy a wakeboard in our online shop. The advanced wakeboard has a high-performance level, but only the best riders will be able to achieve a higher performance, as they are harder to ride and feel twitchy. It relies on correct balance, weight distribution and angle. Intermediate wakeboards are easier to ride, as they are more forgiving and let you progress better. Beginner wakeboards are the easiest to ride, as they build your confidence and help you learn the basics. We sell the following boards:

  • Beginner to intermediate wakeboards

Check out our beginner to intermediate wakeboards if you do not have a lot of experience. These wakeboards generally have a continuous or mellow three-stage rocker and tend to be priced for recreational riders.

  • Intermediate to advanced wakeboards

Do you have experience? Our intermediate to advanced wakeboards might be for you. There is a ton of variety in this category, so make sure you read up on the wakeboard to understand which features compliment your riding style.

  • Advanced to expert wakeboards

Do you know how to ride and perform various tricks? You will probably want to look at advanced to expert wakeboards. In general, these wakeboards have aggressive continuous or three-stage rocker and are less forgiving. Professional riders usually use these models.

The different sizes of wakeboards

The ideal size of your wakeboard is mostly determined by your weight, as that determines how deep your board sits in the water. Each manufacturer’s wakeboard is different, so be sure to check the size chart before purchasing a board. Your weight and preferred manufacturer are not the only thing that determines the ideal size, your riding style plays an important role. A longer board is more forgiving, creates less drag and provides more pop. However, a shorter board sits you deeper into the water, making it ideal for more technical tricks. Do you plan to share a board? Go with a board in the size range of the largest rider. Are you still in doubt? We offer various reasons to help you make a decision:

  • Various reasons to choose a shorter board

Generally, shorter boards are slower, take more energy to push through the water and are harder to land. The more surface area a board has, the faster it moves. However, a shorter board is easier to spin and maneuver in the air.

  • Reasons to choose a longer board

Typically, longer wakeboards are easier to ride. Longer wakeboards are heavier, which means you gain control, even though you need to work harder against the weight in the air. That makes longer boards great for learning tricks and the basics. A longer wakeboard has more surface area so it will sit on top of the water, move quickly and allow smoother landings.

The mounting screws for wakeboard boots

Most of the wakeboard binding screws have the same universal M6, but not all screws are the same length. You should not use screws longer than the thickness of the wakeboard. We do not suggest mounting your wakeboard bindings without the factory screws, but you could do it. Using a screw that is too long can result in damage to your board and voiding the manufacturer’s warranty.

The compatibility between boot and wakeboard

The M6-mounting hardware and 6" binding plates are universally compatible across all brands, with the exception of Liquid Force 4D-bindings. These bindings are only compatible with wakeboards with a Flextrack. Liquid Force wakeboards with Flextrack mounting are compatible with all wakeboard bindings and boots.

The maintenance of your wakeboard

We would like to offer various tips to ensure that you will be able to enjoy your wakeboard for an extended period of time:

  • Keep your wakeboard out of the sun for long periods of time;
  • Rinse your gear with fresh water after use in salt water;
  • Protect your board with a bag for storage and transportation;
  • Store your gear in a cool, dry location.
